My Trip to The American Lhasa Apso Club Specialty Show - October 2001
In 2001, I was fortunate enough to go over to the States to attend the Greater Milwaukee Club Specialty and the American Lhasa Apso Club Specialty. Not deterred by the horrific events of September the 11th, Matt Arnott (of Xiang Shih Tzu) and I set off for New York on the 11 October 2001. We spent 2 and a half days of touring and shopping in New York before boarding a plane to Milwaukee. We then caught a bus and headed for the Olympia Resort Hotel, Oconomowoc where the Lhasa Show were to be held.
We spent 6 wonderful days meeting people and watching the dogs. There was a good entry of dogs, in fact more than I have ever seen in my life ! We were impressed with the friendliness of the people, we were treated like royalty ! We had an educational day in between the 2 shows which was very informative. Cathy Marley's presentation on the Lhasa Apso head was brilliant. It has certainly made me look at my own dogs heads with a more critical eye! We also attended a judges Breed seminar hosted by ALAC. We were given the opportunity to go over some dogs and had had the benefit of some mentors for the show that day.
After the show, we left Oconomowoc to visit a cyber friend, Terri whom I had been corresponding with for a couple of years. She has a gorgeous black Lhasa called Truman, (he was the reason we started corresponding). Terri treated us to tours of her hometown West Salem, La Crosse and even the Mall of America ! An experience in shopping 2 South African girls couldn't get over ! We certainly did our bit for the American economy there !
All too soon, our 2 weeks were up and is was time to cram the suitcases shut and leave Wisconsin, just as the first flurry of snow fell ! We were left with photos and memories of a wonderful trip. We made many friends and spent a lot of money but thoroughly enjoyed our trip of a lifetime.
Thank you to my Husband Daryll, who organised the trip and thank you to all the wonderful people we met in America, especially Terri, who made our trip fantastic.
